What is cable modem?
A cable modem is an
external device that connects to your computer to
provide high-speed data access via cable TV networks.
Instead of getting an Internet connection through your
telephone wire, you get a connection through your cable
network (the same place your cable TV Connection comes
from). It has two connections; one to the TV cable wire
and the other to a computer. A Cable Modem sends and
receives data to and from the Internet by using the
existing coaxial cable network. The modem translates
cable signals the same way a telephone modem translates
signals from a telephone line. Cable modems translate
radio frequency (RF) signals to and from the cable plant
into Internet Protocol (IP), the communications protocol
spoken by all computers connected to the Internet. |

| |
Can I use my current modem with Hathway?
No. Cable modems are unique
devices that work on the cable TV network and are not
compatible with traditional telephone modems. |

How does a cable modem connect to a computer?
A cable modem connects to a
computer through a device called an Ethernet card
(Network Interface Card). This card provides
connectivity between the cable and the computer and
interprets the signaling from the cable modem so that
your computer's software can display it correctly. |
| |
|
| |
What is an Ethernet card?
An Ethernet card is a high-speed
data communications port for a computer. It provides
the necessary speed of data exchange between Hathway's
Service and a computer. It is an internal computer
card that sits in one of the available slots in a
computer. Most computers do not have Ethernet cards as
standard equipment. |
| |
|
| |
Why do I need an Ethernet card?
Just like your dial-up modem uses
a serial port to communicate with your PC, the cable
modem uses an industry standard Ethernet Card to
communicate with the cable modem. |
| |
|
| |
|
Do I still need my phone line to use a cable modem from
Hathway?
No, not at all. You do not
need a telephone line because with Cable Modem
technology, coaxial cable is used to send and receive
data to and from the Internet. |
| |
|
| |
|
Is Hathway a WEBTV? Do I need to have a TV or a Computer
to use Hathway?
Hathway is not WEBTV. You will
need a computer, but not a television. |
| |
|
| |
|
Will a cable modem affect my television reception?
Cable Modems use the same wires as
your cable television, however cable modems operate at
a separate frequency from that of your cable
television channels. By operating at a separate
frequency, the cable modem does not interfere with
your television reception. |
| |
|
| |
| Will
the cable modem work with the existing software?
Yes. A Cable Modem will work with
all software, so you can continue using your current
software. |
| |
|
| |
|
Do I have to remove/disconnect my telephone modem?
No, as long as you have an
expansion slot for your Ethernet card, there is no
need to remove your telephone modem. |
| |
|
| |
|
Can I watch TV and use Hathway (surf the web) at the
same time?
Yes. While the signals travel over
the same coaxial cable, neither cable television
connections nor Hathway connections are affected by
simultaneous use. |
| |
|
| |
| Are
cable modems easy to set up and use?
Well, you don't even have to
worry about that. We will come to your office or home
and install the cable modem for you. After we connect
it up, we'll even give you a short lesson on some of
the differences between cable modems and regular dial
up. |
| |
|
| |
|
Where do I get a cable modem?
Hathway will supply you the
cable modem. |
| |
|
| |
| Will
I have trouble having two modems connected to my PC if I
decide to maintain my dial-up modem as a back up?
No. The cable modem is more like a
network connection. It is not connected to a serial
port, but to an internal network card. So, both your
standard modem and the cable modem can be
simultaneously connected to your computer. |
| |
|
| |
|
Can I still use my phone modem when my cable modem is
connected?
Yes. The cable modem relies on an
Ethernet connection, not a phone line. |
